Captain Marvel to soar with $100 million to $120 million domestic opening weekend

2019 has got off to a fairly slow start at the domestic box office, with ticket sales down on the same period from last year, but it seems business is about to pick up in March as Marvel Studios releases the year’s first superhero blockbuster Captain Marvel.

According to Variety, the movie – which opens in the U.S. on March 8th and stars Brie Larson as U.S. Air Force Pilot turned cosmic superhero Carol Danvers – is tracking a North American opening weekend of between $100 million and $120 million.

Should it reach the lower end of that range, that would put Captain Marvel on par with the last female-fronted superhero blockbuster, Warner Bros. and DC FilmsWonder Woman, which opened to $103 million back in 2017.

Marvel’s last release, Ant-Man and the Wasp, debuted to $75 million this past July, while fellow franchise launcher Black Panther amassed a whopping $202 million in its first three days last February.

Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson has a seven-picture contract with Marvel Studios

Captain Marvel looks set to make a huge impact in the first half of this year; not only do we have next month’s solo movie – the first female-led superhero blockbuster from Marvel Studios – but we’ll also be seeing Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers teaming up with the surviving members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes this April as they take the fight to Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

With the Marvel Cinematic Universe expected to undergo a big shake-up as we head into Phase Four, it seems that Captain Marvel will be central to those plans, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that Oscar-winner Larson is tied down to a seven-movie contract with Marvel Studios.

This shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise, as Marvel always looks to lock its cast into long term contracts of around six movies.

However, Marvel must have been very confident that Larson will

As ‘Captain Marvel,’ Brie Larson Really Threw Herself Into The Character

When Brie Larson was cast as Carol Danvers and her alter ego, Captain Marvel, in the movie of the same name, the Oscar-winner decided she wanted to approach the role in a uniquely personal way. Infusing the character with her own emotions and experiences, she told us, helped her make the performance more organic, and [...]

New Avengers: Endgame Leak Reveals Another Surprising Return

Earlier this week, an Avengers: Endgame Lego leak emerged which teased such potentially revealing toys as a new Quinjet and a giant, Hulkbuster-style suit for War Machine. But look a little closer and you may find another significant detail in the villains that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are fighting.

While some of the new sets come with minifigures for Thanos’ Outrider minions, the images also seem to confirm the legitimacy of an older leak that showed the Lego design for the Chitauri. Though these extra-terrestrial figures have shown up briefly in a few McU installments, by far their biggest moment in the spotlight has been 2012’s The Avengers, in which they fought the titular heroes in the Battle of New York. And while there’s no guarantee that the creatures will make it into the upcoming film, you can see why some fans are taking the new image as further

How the Digital Era Is Changing How Directors Interact With Actors

How the Digital Era Is Changing How Directors Interact With Actors
Josh Brolin hardly looked tough shooting his role as super-villain Thanos in Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame,” dressed as he was in a skintight motion capture bodysuit with multicolored tracking markings, two HD cameras attached to headgear pointing at his dotted face, and a pole sticking up from the back of his vest holding a cardboard cutout of his character’s countenance above his head. But the sibling directing team of Anthony and Joe Russo still acted as if he were a badass.

“Brolin would love it that we would treat Thanos like he was a gangster character,” says younger brother Joe Russo. “We’d use terminology that would be reflective of that and say he’s a psychopath and he wants control, not he’s a giant purple creature who relates to the universe this way, so he could correlate it to a genre and character motivation that he could access.

"Captain Marvel" In the Hollywood Reporter

  • SneakPeek
Sneak Peek new images of Oscar winner Brie Larson, aka 'Carol Danvers' in Marvel Studios upcoming superhero feature, "Captain Marvel", posing for a recent Hollywood Reporter cover shoot:

"I wasn't perfect and didn't have it together," said Larson. "I felt alone. So through acting, I decided to be a shape shifter and with every role become the character instead of being myself.

"It meant about 10 years of no one knowing I was the same person in every movie.

"I think it's always the moments that are the trials that end up making you become a hero in the end. You're not a hero unless you've gone through the trials.

"...And it makes these moments so much sweeter, so much better. I don't believe in 'deserved,' but I might believe in 'earned'.

"I'm really interested in mythology and folklore. I'm interested in moralities, why we're here, faith...

"...all of these

Nintendo Direct February 2019 Highlights – Mario, Marvel, Final Fantasy, Link’s Awakening and more

The first Nintendo Direct of 2019 seems to have set the stage for the first half of the year nicely, shifting the focus entirely towards upcoming games for the wildly popular Switch, with not a single mention of the aging-yet-still-living 3Ds platform. With only a few exceptions, most titles mentioned will be arriving in stores or on the eShop by the end summer.

A Super Mario Maker 2 announcement kicked off the presentation, displaying features that the original lacked, like the ability to create sloped surfaces, new power ups, and potentially new playable characters. Though no exact date was announced, Nintendo committed to a June release window.

Originally announced as a Nintendo Switch exclusive at The Game Awards back in December, Team Ninja’s Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order will hit stores this summer. Along with additional gameplay footage, it was revealed that the game will also feature Captain Marvel,

Samuel L. Jackson thinks Stan Lee could continue to have Marvel cameos thanks to 3D scanning

Samuel L. Jackson, one of the stars of the upcoming Captain Marvel, thinks that the late Stan Lee could continue to have Marvel cameos thanks to 3D scanning.

The fact that there will be no more Stan Lee cameos in Marvel movies after the legend’s recent passing is something that many fans are going to miss. However, Samuel L. Jackson seems to think that there could be a way to keep the cameos coming.

Due to the fact that Marvel 3D scans the actors so much, Jackson thinks theoretically they could recreate Stan Lee and have his famous cameos continue in perpetuity. Speaking at a Captain Marvel panel in Singapore, the actor said:

“He’ll be missed and I’m sure, well, the way they scan us, he might still end up in every Marvel movie we do. You’ll be shocked. ‘I thought he was dead. When did he shoot this?

Avengers: Endgame Toy Leak Reveals One Way to Defeat Thanos?

Avengers: Endgame Toy Leak Reveals One Way to Defeat Thanos?
It looks like there is going to be a massive War Machine suit utilized in Avengers: Endgame. A new Lego set, which is on sale in the U.K., reveals the huge suit along with two mini figures of War Machine and Ant-Man, along with two more Outriders. There have been a bunch of toy leaks from the upcoming movie revealed over the last few weeks and the Russo Brothers warn that 99% of them are not accurate. However, it was around this time last year that the official Infinity War Lego sets began to leak and they provided some solid info about the movie before it hit theaters.

It's not clear how the War Machine suit got so big, but it is pretty crazy. It looks like the Hulkbuster suit, but it's silver with some red markings, like the original War Machine suit, and it's a lot bigger than the normal Hulkbuster suit.

Brie Larson Scored Bigger Payday For Captain Marvel Than Any McU First-Timer

Though Marvel Studios has a lot of money to throw around these days, the studio has a reputation for being relatively stingy when it comes to the amount they pay their biggest stars for their first outings in the franchise. Chris Hemsworth, for example, received just $150,000 for 2011’s Thor, despite the film’s total budget being one thousand times that amount. For the upcoming Captain Marvel, however, it seems that Brie Larson landed a much better deal than her colleagues.

THR reports that the Oscar-winning actress is making $5 million for Carol Danvers’ McU debut, a total that tops the fee for any other first-timer in the franchise. Seeing how even Chadwick Boseman – who’d already appeared as T’Challa in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War – earned just $2 million for 2018’s Black Panther, it’s clear that Marvel has a lot of faith in Larson to deliver a heroine that filmgoers will want to see.

Captain Marvel currently tracking for heroic $100+ million opening weekend

  • JoBlo
Marvel has been doing some of its best business at the box office ever over the last two years, with all of the movies since Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 making over $100 million during their opening weekend (with the exception of Ant-man And The Wasp). Captain Marvel Is on Target for a Huge $100M+ Box Office Debut

Captain Marvel Is on Target for a Huge $100M+ Box Office Debut
Captain Marvel early tracking places the movie around the $100 million-plus range for its debut weekend domestically. Marvel Studios has not put out a movie since Ant-Man and the Wasp, which was in July 2018 and means that fans are hungry for a new outing from the studio. With the dreary ending of Infinity War, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are anxious to see how Carol Danvers will fit into the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, which hits theaters less than two months after Captain Marvel. With that said, Marvel's first female-led movie could end up making a lot more than the $100 million projections.

Outside of Iron Man's $102 million and Black Panther's $202 million, no other origin movie in the McU has made it past the $100 million mark during their opening weekend box office. And in the case of T'Challa, he was technically introduced in Captain America: Civil War. While looking at those numbers,

X-Men Producer Wanted To Make An X-Women Movie

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner has been involved in the X-Men film series right from the start, having helped guide the cinematic universe through some varied, sometimes risky territory over the years. But with the producer set to walk away from the property as Disney takes the reins, it seems there’s at least one more project that she wishes she’d been able to make.

Speaking to Decider at the Television Critics Association’s 2019 winter tour, Donner mentioned that she wanted to make an X-Men movie led by female mutants:

“I frankly wanted to see an X-Women movie. I didn’t get it through. But I think that would be cool. I think — not to have no guys in it, you have to have guys in it — but to make instead of Charles and Magneto at the helm it’ll be whomever. Kitty Pryde and Illyana [Rasputin]. Something like that.”

Regardless,

Brie Larson's Captain Marvel Payday Tops All Previous McU First Timers

Brie Larson's Captain Marvel Payday Tops All Previous McU First Timers
Brie Larson is set to make $5 million for her turn as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become the single most bankable thing in Hollywood. Even on the low end these days, it's something other studios would die for.

However, Marvel Studios has been historically stingy about paying actors a ton of money up front for their first outing, which is why the payday given to Brie Larson is so impressive. Especially when compared to the salaries of other actors with their first movies in the McU.

Going back to where it all began, Robert Downey Jr. was paid $500,000 for his role in Iron Man. But, at the time, he was more or less washed up and was far from the global superstar he is today. Not to mention that nobody knew if this McU thing was going to work out and most of these characters

Box Office: Captain Marvel Shooting For Huge $100M-Plus Opening Weekend

Captain Marvel looks set to light up the domestic box office with what will be the first truly heroic debut of 2019.

Per Variety, the female-fronted superhero flick is currently tracking for a $100M-plus opening in North America, with some independent analysts predicting a figure closer to $120M based on positive word of mouth. Excitement for Captain Marvel is palpable, so we fully expect those numbers to ebb and flow as we approach release day.

Either way, a $100M debut far exceeds that of Ant-Man and the Wasp, which earned $75M in its opening weekend off the back of the $2 billion dollar titan that is Avengers: Infinity War. But Captain Marvel heralds the beginning of a new franchise at Marvel Studios, and by all accounts, it looks as though Carol Danvers will be off to a flyer.
