Hated at first- loving it now
24 May 2016 | by kristinedunsonSee all my reviews

So I preceded the "girls" living in Brooklyn by about a decade. When the show started I felt like the show represent the spoiled, white, clueless white girls of America. I respected Lena Dunham's prose and ability to develop characters. However I felt that not only did the characters seem spoiled, she also seemed to relish the in the humiliation (particularly sexually) of the various characters. I wondered how this was representing and empowering young, independent women. I did not identify with it. It was not a "Sex in the City" experience for me. But, I still recognized that Lena was unbelievably talented. However, this past season 5, I feel like there was a maturity and an overall more relatability that resonated with me. I'm guessing it had to do with growing up and comfort in her own skin (that's what happens for women in their 30's). I think that there were a few episode this season that were simply sublime- Marney re-connecting (quasi) with her ex. The soundtrack by Jillian Nichols really complimented it (I have many of the tracks on repeat). I say to Lena- please keep this up for next season. This is the first season gap time that I actually care what happens to the ladies. And by the way- how can they still afford to live in Williamsburg? Brooklyn is freakin expensive now!
