Storyline

Walt is suffering from insomnia, worried about the choices he has made and the direction his life has taken. Unaware that Jesse has been skimming a bit of their product, he also worried that the numbers in his formulas don't add up and that they always seem to somewhere between 4 and 8 ounces short of what the batch should have produced. The meticulous Walt is also concerned - to the point of paranoia - when he discovers a housefly in the lab. Worried about contamination, he goes to extreme lengths to kill it. Jesse comes to his rescue in an interesting way. Written by garykmcd

Trivia

Jesse calls Walter's fly swatter a "fly saber." The director of this episode, Rian Johnson, was later picked to direct Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017). See more »

Goofs

Jesse talks about a TV show on hyenas that he saw. He says the head hyena was "the Man" and how gross it was that the other pack members had to "lick his junk" to show respect. Either Jesse or the script writer didn't realize that among hyenas the females are actually dominant, including the leader of the pack. They are larger than the males and have other marked masculine physical traits due to a naturally high level of testosterone. If Walter knew that, he didn't bother to correct Jesse's mistake. Quotes

Jesse Pinkman: Possum. Big, freaky, lookin' bitch. Since when did they change it to opossum? When I was comin' up it was just possum. Opossum makes it sound like he's irish or something. Why do they gotta go changing everything?

Best episode of the series

I have been waiting desperately for an episode focused on Jesse and Walt, and I have finally gotten it. This episode was an excellent look into the souls of Jesse and Walt. A look into their minds to figure out how they are truly feeling about their lives. It is centered around a fly in their lab, but the fly is actually a symbol. For what? I cannot say in this review, but it was quite profound. A very artistic, introspective episode. The fact there are people out there who consider this the worst is shocking and disappointing to me. There are few shows out there with writers of such high quality; creating an ENGAGING and IMPACTFUL episode out of a fly is simply remarkable. Writers, please save all the gimmicky action sequences, and put more episodes in like this one. "Fly" is remarkable.
