Spider-Women, Captain Marvel & Harley Quinn: Females Fly In The Face Of Old Hollywood Perceptions

  • Deadline
Forty years ago the big holiday hit was Superman, Hollywood’s very first superhero blockbuster. Warner Bros marketed the movie by promising the sky to moviegoers: “You’ll believe a man can fly.”

Now, four decades later, that promise should be rewritten to reflect a new era of superhero blockbusters: “You better believe a woman can fly, too.”

Deadline broke the news this week that Sony is ramping up a Spider-Women film that will feature three female iterations of Marvel’s wall-crawling Spider-Man and a script by Bek Smith. The project joins a growing wave of female superhero projects in the works that will test the conventional assumption that the mask-and-cape genre is a “boys only” sector.

Skeptics would point to the all-female revamp of Ghostbusters as a reminder that gender stunts with genre properties can fall flat. But the success of Wonder Woman has been a lighting-rod moment for a female “super-empowerment” craze.

Plenty Of Laughs And Thrills With 'A Simple Favor' Stars Blake Lively And Anna Kendrick

On the surface, there seems to be very little funny about A Simple Favor, the film that brings together Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. Certainly not the plot, which centers around Stephanie (Anna), a mommy blogger who is determined to uncover the truth behind her best friend Emily's (Blake) sudden disappearance from their small town after being asked to pick her son up from school. From there, the story includes betrayals and reversals, a dead body, and the question soon to be asked by pretty much everyone: who is duping whom? But then, when you hear that the film is directed by Paul Feig (Ghostbusters: Answer the Call), it at least provides an explanation of why there's plenty of dark humor here as well. "Thrillers are my favorite thing to watch, because as an audience you're engaged, you're being pulled along, you're being surprised, and you're having the rug pulled out from under you occasionally,

Sandra Bullock Thinks The Backlash To The Ghostbusters Reboot Was Unfair

The insane levels of hatred levelled at the 2016 Ghostbusters remake was seriously disturbing. With its all-female cast and outspoken progressive credentials, the film landed smack dab in the middle of a culture war that’s still being viciously fought to this day.

The 1984 original was one of my favorite movies as a kid and I loved The Real Ghostbusters cartoon – and prior to release I was even busily arguing that there was no reason an all-female Ghostbusters wouldn’t work. In case you couldn’t tell, I really, really wanted the reboot to be good. But, sadly for its would-be defenders, it sucked big time.

Now, with Ocean’s 8 carrying the gender-flipped movies baton in 2018, star Sandra Bullock has weighed in on why the reception to the Ghostbusters reboot infuriated her so much:

That was unfair on a level that I can’t even not be mad about talking about.

Second Opinion – Ocean’s 8 (2018)

Ocean’s 8, 2018.

Directed by Gary Ross.

Starring Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Awkwafina, Sarah Paulson, Richard Armitage, Dakota Fanning, and James Corden.

Debbie Ocean gathers an all-female crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City’s yearly Met Gala.

As George Clooney’s Danny Ocean passes the franchise torch to his estranged sister, Gary Ross’ Ocean’s 8 aims to prove million-dollar heists aren’t just a man’s game. Ladies can be Ghostbusters now, after all. Why not notorious thieves? Ross and co-writer Olivia Milch downsize from luxurious Las Vegas casinos to New York City’s historical museums, which also reduces “wow” factors a dabble. Danny’s plans were always extravagant, intricate and recklessly showy, and that’s not to say Debbie is any less talented – but it’s a different snatch game this time around. Ross doesn’t showcase

‘Hotel Artemis’ Review: Jodie Foster’s Acting Return & Impressive Cast Make Noirish Curiosity Worth Watching

‘Hotel Artemis’ Review: Jodie Foster’s Acting Return & Impressive Cast Make Noirish Curiosity Worth Watching
It has been five years since Elysium, the last time Jodie Foster headlined a movie on camera, and for her return she has chosen another futuristic tale, Hotel Artemis — a rather odd duck of a project. In this dystopian crime thriller, she is considerably aged up and known only as The Nurse, a take-all-prisoners woman who for 22 years has run the Hotel Artemis, an Art Deco-looking building in 2028 Los Angeles whose penthouse serves as an emergency hospital for criminals who are “members.” Getting into the Hotel Artemis is harder than entering CIA headquarters, and you have to have a special microchip in your arm to pass through the tightly secured building. It is a very exclusive club indeed, and Foster’s Nurse doesn’t allow exceptions or rules to be broken.

In a compact 93 minutes, writer-director Drew Pearce, known mostly for scripting Iron Man 3 (with new scripts listed on

'Ocean's 8' Will Run Off With Weekend #1 & 'Hereditary' Readies Record Debut for A24
One year ago, fueled by female audiences, Wonder Woman was lighting up the summer box office, en route to becoming the third largest domestic release of 2017. This weekend, the female-led ensemble cast of Ocean's 8 looks to deliver some solid results of its own following a downer weekend last week. Also hitting theaters is A24's much-talked about horror film Hereditary as well as Global Road's Hotel Artemis. Meanwhile, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is getting its start internationally this weekend, two weeks ahead of its domestic bow. Debuting in a healthy 4,145 theaters, Ocean's 8 features a massive ensemble including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina and Mindy Kaling. The film fits within the Ocean's film franchise, which began with the 2001 remake starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon and debuted with $38.1 million. That filmed spawned two sequels, the last of which hit theaters eleven years ago,
