‘On Becoming a God in Central Florida’ Review: Kirsten Dunst Lords Over an Excellent Sunshine State Satire

‘On Becoming a God in Central Florida’ Review: Kirsten Dunst Lords Over an Excellent Sunshine State Satire
“On Becoming a God in Central Florida” is such a clever, compelling, and thorough evisceration of American capitalism it’s shocking Elizabeth Warren isn’t listed as an executive producer. Created by Robert Funke and Matt Lutsky, Showtime’s new hourlong black comedy does feature a few well-known progressive producers in EPs George Clooney and Grant Heslov, but the ’90s-set story of lower-middle class Floridians put to ruin by a pyramid scheme isn’t solely a political statement; it chronicles a tragedy in action, as the promise of the American dream is ripped away from those who believe in it — and need it — the most. Like any great satire, you won’t be able to tell if you’re laughing so hard it hurts, or if you’ve just been punched in the gut.

The awesome Kirsten Dunst (also an Ep) is the story here, bringing a captivating vitality and

Kirsten Dunst Talks ‘Little Women,’ ‘Interview With a Vampire’ Reboots
Kirsten Dunst was just 11 years old when she skyrocketed into stardom as Claudia in “Interview with a Vampire,” but now Dunst says her age is the only thing keeping her from reprising the role in a hypothetical reboot.

“I mean I’m too old, right?,” she told Variety at the premiere of “On Becoming a God in Central Florida.” “I was a child stuck, so I don’t know how that would work. It would be kind of sad, me in a curly wig. No one wants to see that.”

Dunst was far more excited about another one of her childhood roles getting a reboot,

‘Pose’ Season 2’s Beautiful Finale Celebrates What Sisterhood Can Achieve

‘Pose’ Season 2’s Beautiful Finale Celebrates What Sisterhood Can Achieve
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers from the “Pose” Season 2 finale “In My Heels.”]

It’s not every TV show that can reach its climax with a character lip-synching to Whitney Houston’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner, but “Pose” not only pulls off this performance with show-stopping style, it does so with emotional honesty. This triumphant ballroom moment is also a callback to the boldest narrative choice this season, resulting in a well-crafted arc that is both meaningful and thrilling.

In the finale “In My Heels,” House of Evangelista mother Blanca (Mj Rodriguez) has just emerged from a debilitating stint in the hospital stemming from her HIV. Although she’s weak, she attends the Mother’s Day Ball and enters the lip-synch contest Candy’s Sweet Refrain while being pushed in a wheelchair. By the end of the national anthem, she’s ripped off her frumpy sweater and lap blanket, abandoned her chair, and finishes standing proudly in a dazzling red ensemble.

Variety to Forgo Annual Emmy Party for Donation to Planned Parenthood

Variety has decided to make a donation to Planned Parenthood in lieu of hosting this year’s annual Emmy Awards nominees party in partnership with Women In Film.

The decision comes in response to Planned Parenthood’s Aug. 19 announcement that it will drop funding over the current administration’s “unethical” rule blocking the organization from discussing its abortion services with patients.

Planned Parenthood, which has stood up to controversy, protests and violent attacks throughout its history, says it will fight what it calls the “unethical and dangerous gag rule” in court and refuses to be “bullied” into withholding abortion information from its patients.
