Showtime Picks Up ‘On Becoming A God In Central Florida’ Series Starring Kirsten Dunst In Turnaround From YouTube
Showtime has picked up On Becoming A God in Central Florida, a one-hour dark comedy series starring Kirsten Dunst. The project, from George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures and Sony’s TriStar Television, was ordered to series last year by YouTube to debut this year.

Sony TV started conversations about moving the show elsewhere earlier this year, following the Google-owned company’s programming shift that involves making all original series, originally earmarked for Svod platform YouTube Red/Premium, available as Avod offerings, as well as putting a pin in all new scripted development. According to sources, YouTube and Sony TV were not able to negotiate an Avod deal for On Becoming a God in Central Florida. YouTube Originals’ brass, who are said to be proud of the show, then worked closely with Sony TV to find a new home for it. Sony TV also has hit Cobra Kai at YouTube,

Gloria Vanderbilt Dies at 95
Gloria Vanderbilt, a famous model and socialite who was often a subject of fascination in the worlds of fashion and media, has died at 95, according to a report on CNN, where her son, anchor Anderson Cooper, has worked for several years.

From a young age, Vanderbilt led a tumultuous life, one marked by a heated custody battle over her and her inheritance when she was young, and filled with marriages and business ventures as she grew older. “She lived her entire life in the public eye,” Cooper said in a video obituary that aired on CNN Monday.

Vanderbilt was the only daughter of railroad magnate Reginald Vanderbilt and his second wife. As such, she and a half-sister, Cathleen Vanderbilt, each stood to inherit a share in a trust after the executive died when Gloria was just eighteen months old. Her paternal aunt would eventually win custody over the girl and her share in the trust. The trial around who would take control of young Vanderbilt’s life and finances was a tabloid sensation at the time.

Box Office: ‘Men in Black: International,’ ‘Shaft’ Add to Summer Sequel Slump
As “Men in Black: International” and “Shaft” join the growing list of under-performing sequels this summer — an ignominious group that includes “Dark Phoenix” and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” — worries of franchise fatigue are beginning to simmer in Hollywood.

“Franchises that don’t up the ante or bring anything new into the fold are suffering terrible fates at the box office of late,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst at Exhibitor Relations. “It’s not enough to throw a Roman numeral on your film, or reboot just because you can.”

It’s hardly a new phenomenon, the notion that audiences grow tired of movies after too many iterations, but one that tends to intensify over summer as pricey tentpoles debut within weeks of one another. The pileup of new releases makes it more challenging for would-be blockbusters to find their footing beyond opening weekend. That conversation was pushed to the forefront

Eva Longoria on ABC’s ‘Grand Hotel’ and Flipping the Upstairs, Downstairs Genre on Its Head

  • The Wrap
ABC’s new primetime summer soap “Grand Hotel” has all the trappings of an ABC primetime soap: murder, intrigue, steamy romance and secret affairs. But it also does something few shows before it have ever done.

Executive produced by Eva Longoria and created by her “Desperate Housewives” and “Devious Maids” collaborator Brian Tanen, “Grand Hotel” takes the classic upstairs/downstairs format and centers it around an affluent, powerful and glamorous Latino family.

“I was obsessed with making sure this wasn’t just going to be developed, that this was going to be on the air,” said Longoria, whose company UnbeliEVAble Entertainment first secured the rights to the Spanish series upon which the show is based. “Iwas a dog with a bone. I was like, ‘This will be on the air.'”

VidAngel Ordered to Pay Hollywood Studios $62.4 Million For Pirating Movies

  • The Wrap
After its practices were ruled illegal by a U.S. district judge, streaming site VidAngel was ordered by a jury to pay $62.4 million to Disney, Warner Bros. and Fox for streaming their films without permission.

VidAngel offered users the ability to watch films with violence, sex and other mature content edited out, but was ordered by the courts to shut down in late 2016 after it was discovered that the edited versions of over 800 films had been ripped from DVDs and placed on the service without studio permission. The studio plaintiffs asked the jury to enforce the maximum penalty of $125 million, while attorneys for the defendants argued that VidAngel should only pay the minimum of $600,000 as the company believed what it was doing was legal under the Family Movie Act.

VidAngel, which has already filed for bankruptcy in Utah, found a second life as a filtering service for streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon,

Jon Hamm, Olivia Wilde to Star in Clint Eastwood’s ‘Richard Jewell’
Jon Hamm and Olivia Wilde are set to star in Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

“Richard Jewell,” previously titled “The Ballad of Richard Jewell,” is based on the story of a security guard who was falsely accused in the bombing that took place at Atlanta’s Centennial Park during the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Billy Ray wrote the screenplay based on the 1997 Vanity Fair article from Marie Brenner that describes how Jewell, originally hailed by the media as a hero for alerting police to the presence of a bomb and helping evacuate the area, was identified as a prime suspect in the Olympic Park bombing, completely upending his life in the process.

Olivia Wilde and Jon Hamm have joined the cast of Clint Eastwood’s already star-studded drama “Richard Jewell.”

Paul Walter Hauser is set to star as the titular Jewell in Warner Bros.’ pic alongside Sam Rockwell as Jewell’s attorney and Kathy Bates as Jewell’s mother.

The drama is based on Marie Brenner’s article in Vanity Fair chronicling the story of Jewell, a real-life security guard whose world was turned upside down after law enforcement leaked to an overzealous reporter that Jewell was a possible suspect for the pipe-bombing at Centennial Park during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Wilde will play real-life reporter Kathy Scruggs, who covered the event as it unfolded, and Hamm will play an FBI agent investigating the bombing.

As law enforcement asserted Jewell planted the bomb himself and then “found” it to earn praise, the city reopened the park and attempted to calm a terrified public

Hong Kong’s ‘Where the Wind Blows’ Sidesteps Protests For China Promo

Hong Kong film director Philip Yung and his cast were in Shanghai on Monday to promote their upcoming film “Where the Wind Blows.” They revealed new details while cautiously sidestepping — for the most part — the awkward issue of last week’s massive civil protests in Hong Kong against a controversial bill that would have deepen ties with China, which have been entirely censored from mainland Chinese media.

The film, which used to be titled “Theory of Ambitions” in English, stars Hong Kong’s Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Aaron Kwok, Patrick Tam and Michael Chow and Chinese actress Du Juan. The actors play four notoriously corrupt police officers who rose to power in 1960s Hong Kong, and Du one of their wives. The stylish crime thriller covers a particularly long time span, said Kwok, saying he had to play officer Lui Lok from age 20 up until around 80.

“As a born and bred Hong Konger,

Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx Talks ‘The Dirt’ Audiobook, Trump’s ‘Motley Crew’ Tweet (Exclusive)

Thanks to the press and success around Mötley Crüe’s raucous Netflix biopic “The Dirt,” the “world’s most notorious rock band” are releasing a 14-hour-plus audiobook version of the 2001 New York Times best-seller on June 25 through HarperAudio and Dey Street Books. Motley Crue “tossed around” the idea of narrating the tome themselves, but, “it just didn’t feel right for us,” explains bassist and co-founder Nikki Sixx, who read the audiobook for his own “Heroin Diaries” autobiography. Mötley was interested in utilizing actors from the film — who include Pete Davidson of “Saturday Night Live” fame — but it proved too difficult logistically, so respected voice actors read “The Dirt” audiobook (Sebastian York narrates Sixx’s part). The band, says Sixx, is “super happy” with the results.

He adds that the group pushed for an audiobook when “The Dirt” was first released some 18 years ago, but in the pre-streaming audio era,
