Box Office: Kevin Spacey's 'Billionaire Boys Club' Earns Abysmal $126 on Opening Day
Disgraced actor Kevin Spacey is enduring a career low at the box office this weekend.

The ensemble crime-drama Billionaire Boys Club quietly opened Friday in 10 theaters scattered in select states across the U.S. The indie film earned an abysmal $126 for the day following its release on premium VOD last month, according to those with access to theater grosses.

Put another way, that's a per location average of $12.60, which doesn't even equal two tickets if going by the current average ticket price of $9.27. For the full weekend, Billionaire Boys Club could have trouble hitting ...

‘Stranger Things’ Season 3 Is Inspired by 1985’s ‘Fletch’ (Exclusive)
When Season 3 of “Stranger Things” eventually returns, don’t expect Chief Jim Hopper to be jumping for joy at the sight of Starcourt Mall — or rushing to buy a sundae from Joe Keery’s Steve Harrington, for that matter. “I don’t know if Hopper would be caught dead at Scoops Ahoy,” David Harbour joked ahead of a spooky “Stranger Things” screening at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles on Friday night.

Harbour characterized the curmudgeonly cop with a heart of gold’s outlook towards the town’s new development as a little more than complicated. “Clearly, he’s a

While the documentary, which reportedly captured Rihanna at work on her 2016 album Anti, was expected to arrive in 2017, Berg told Slash Film that the movie should be out within two months.

Boots Riley Criticizes Spike Lee’s Portrayal of Cops in ‘BlacKkKlansman,’ Calls the Real Ron Stallworth a ‘Villain’
For the second time this week, “Sorry to Bother You” director Boots Riley has taken issue with “BlacKkKlansman.” Spike Lee’s latest is among the most well-received films of the year, even winning the Grand Prix at Cannes in May, and though Riley praises the “masterful craftwork” he nevertheless felt compelled to write what he calls a “political critique of the content and timing” of the film.

At the center of that critique is the fact that “BlacKkKlansman” is “being pushed as a true story and it is precisely its untrue elements that make a cop a hero against racism.” The film tells the story of Ron Stallworth, a black police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan.

“It’s a made up story in which the false parts of it to try to make a cop the protagonist in the fight against racist oppression,” Riley argues. “It’s being

Who Is Afraid of the Darkness? Bane Is (Probably) Coming to ‘Gotham’ for Final Season
Calm down, “Gotham” fans, ’cause we are this much closer to Batman. Well, we are this much closer to one of his biggest rivals, Bane. Probably.

TheWrap has obtained the titles for the first eight episodes of the fifth and final season of the Dark Knight prequel series and the last one is — are you ready for it? — “I am Bane.”

Ok, if that isn’t a clear indication we’ll be seeing the man who was born in the dark arrive on the Fox drama next year, we don’t know what is. Especially because when the network announced in May this would be the show’s final season, it said the installment “will focus on Bruce Wayne’s transformation into the caped crusader.” So Batman v. Bane, yes?

Late-Night TV Has a Growing Problem: Maybe There’s Too Much of It

Something funny is going on with late-night TV, but it’s not the sort of development that’s going to make anyone laugh.

Netflix’s decision to cancel programs led by comics Michelle Wolf and Joel McHale that emulated traditional late-night series, revealed Friday, marks just the most recent move in what might be seen as a scaling back of the genre. Bet in July declined to launch a second season of Robin Thede’s “The Rundown.” And Comedy Central in June axed Jordan Klepper’s “The Opposition,” a new bid to find a natural follow to its flagship “The Daily Show

Don’t Tell Allison Janney She Could Make Emmy History: ‘Should I Change My Name?’

Don’t Tell Allison Janney She Could Make Emmy History: ‘Should I Change My Name?’
A version of this story about Allison Janney first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.

Allison Janney could make history at the Emmys this year, but she doesn’t want to hear about it.

For starters, a win in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on “Mom” would be her eighth Emmy, tying her with Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the most performing wins by an actress.

In addition, she could complete an Oscar-Emmy double play so rare that only two other actresses, both of them named Helen, have accomplished it.

Helen Hunt did it in 1998, winning an Oscar for “As Good as It Gets” and then five months later picking up an Emmy for “Mad About You.” Helen Mirren repeated the feat in

Film Review: ‘Billionaire Boys Club’

Film Review: ‘Billionaire Boys Club’
Tough break. After 15 years in director’s jail, “Wonderland” helmer James Cox resurfaces with another smarmy true-crime drama, “Billionaire Boys Club,” this one about a bunch of Los Angeles investment scammers who wound up whacking a couple of their associates when their Ponzi scheme started to go south, only to have the film implode in the wake of #MeToo allegations against co-star Kevin Spacey. This one quietly debuted via VOD on July 17, where there was presumably little demand, followed by a small theatrical release a month later.

Granted, it doesn’t help that “Billionaire Boys Club” was horrible to begin with, the kind of dumbed-down, West Coast, wanna-be “The Wolf of Wall Street” that gives “derivatives trading” a whole new meaning. But the irony of the film’s inevitable failure is that Spacey — who delivers one of his great egomaniacal scenery-chewing performances — took the risk of playing a character dangerously

“When I finally got my foot in the door, I only had three dream projects on my bucket list,” he wrote on a Twitter thread Thursday. “One was Marvel, one was Star Wars, and the third, of course, was Stephen King. Any one of those jobs would let me die a happy man.”

“Now, thirty years later, I’m beyond thrilled to be part of the team bringing The Tommyknockers to life. It just feels…right, you know? Like coming home. And most of all, thanks to @stephenking for the lifetime of incredible nightmares,” he added. “Just don’t go in the woods.”

‘Good Place’ Writer Megan Amram Wants an Emmy So Badly She Made a Whole Series About It

‘Good Place’ Writer Megan Amram Wants an Emmy So Badly She Made a Whole Series About It
A version of this story about Megan Amram first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.

Watching last year’s Emmys, Megan Amram (whose day job is writing for “The Good Place”) decided that she could win one in the Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series category. So she filmed a web series, “An Emmy for Megan,” entirely about her desire to win an Emmy. So far, so good: She was nominated for two Emmys, one for acting and one for producing.

Talking to her about this requires becoming her straight man.

Congratulations. It would have been awful to do the whole web series and then not get a nomination.

I know. But part of me thought it’d be exciting either way. Because either I get the nomination, which is one step closer to what I really want, or I don’t,

Rosamund Pike: I Was Told to Strip Down for ‘Die Another Day’ Audition
Rosamund Pike says she was told to strip down to her underwear during an audition for “Die Another Day,” a role she eventually got.

“My first audition was for a Bond film and I remember them saying I was to drop my dress and appear in my underwear,” Pike said in an “Audible Session” to promote an audio book of Jane Austen’s “Sense & Sensibility,” which Pike narrated.

“On the day, I don’t know how I got the resolve and strength of mind, but I just thought, ‘Actually sod that, if they’re gonna see me in my underwear, they better give me the job,'” she said. “So, I thought, ‘There’s no way I’m going to take off a dress in the audition for this tape to be sent around Los Angeles and to be judged on that.'”
