Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in Remake of Denmark’s Oscar Entry ‘The Guilty’ (Exclusive)
Bold Films, and Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker’s Nine Stories Productions have acquired the rights to remake the Danish thriller “The Guilty,” with Gyllenhaal attached to star.

The pic, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, won the world cinema audience award and was also named one of the top five foreign language films of 2018 by the National Board of Review. The movie, Denmark’s foreign language film Oscar entry, is also nominated for best screenwriter and best actor at the 2018 European Film Awards.

The movie follows a police officer under investigation, who’s demoted to desk-work at an emergency call center. When he receives a terrified phone call from a kidnapped woman, he must battle his internal demons in order to save her.

Gyllenhaal and Marker will produce for Nine Stories, alongside Bold Films’ Michel Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, David Litvak, and Svetlana Metkina. Bold Films will finance the pic.

"Sharp Objects" Alum Jean-Marc Vallee to Direct HBO’s ''Gorilla and the Bird" Adaptation

Big Little Lies” and “Sharp Objects” alum Jean-Marc Vallée has re-teamed with HBO for yet another limited series.

The director has signed on to direct and executive produce the network’s upcoming adaptation of “Gorilla and the Bird,” HBO announced on Monday.

An adaptation of the memoir by former attorney Zack McDermott, the series is described as “an inspirational tale of a mother’s unconditional love for her bipolar son.” Bryan Sipe, who previously collaborated with Vallée on the 2015 Jake Gyllenhaal-led film “Demolition,” is executive producer and showrunner on the limited series.

"Power" Shuts Down Production After Crew Member Killed

The Starz series “Power” has shut down production after an on-set accident led to the death of a production assistant early Monday morning.

Pedro Jimenez was setting up traffic cones for a shoot in Brooklyn at approximately 4:30 Am ET when he was struck by an SUV. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of the members of our ‘Power’ family,” a Starz spokesperson said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with Mr. Jimenez’ family as we work to fully understand what has happened.”

It is unknown at this time precisely how long the production shut down will last. “Power” is currently in production on its sixth season.

Court TV Brand to Resurface as Digital Multicast Channel From Scripps Co.

Court TV is back in session. The cable TV channel that once carried gavel-to-gavel live coverage of high-profile trials will be revived by a new owner, nearly a dozen years after it was shuttered by Turner Broadcasting.

Katz Networks, a division of E.W. Scripps Co., plans to revive Court TV as a digital multicast channel to be distributed by local TV stations around the country starting in May. Katz has acquired the Court TV moniker and some 100,000 hours of vintage Court TV programming from Turner, now owned by At&T.

Jake Gyllenhaal has signed on to star in a remake of the Danish thriller “The Guilty,” which the actor has acquired the rights to through his Nine Stories Productions banner along with Bold Films.

The original version, which won the world audience award at Sundance this year and is Denmark’s entry for this year’s Best Foreign Language Oscar, follows a cop with a dark past who has been suspended and relegated to a desk job. One night, he receives a call from a terrified woman, and must conquer his inner demons to save her.

Gyllenhaal will also produce alongside Nine Stories co-founder Riva Marker, with Michel Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, David Litvak, and Svetlana Metkina also producing for Bold Films, which is financing.The original film’s co-writer/director Gustav Möller and producer Lina Flint will serve as executive producers.

Legendary Entertainment is developing “The Toxic Avenger” as a movie after acquiring the feature film rights.

Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment will serve as producers. Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter will oversee for Legendary.

Kaufman and Herz produced the original 1984 comedy, set in the fictional town of Tromaville, N.J., and centered on a mild-mannered janitor at a health club who’s chased out a second story window by bullies and lands in a drum of toxic waste. With nine nominations over the last 30 years, Diane Warren is second only to Marilyn Bergman in Oscar song nominations for a female songwriter. “I’ll Fight,” her song from the Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary “Rbg,” marks the third year that she’s been in the race with an anthemic song of inspiration, after “Til It Happens to You” from “The Hunting Ground” and “Stand Up for Something” from “Marshall.”

Over the last three years, you’ve had a string of inspirational songs from movies. Are you consciously changing what you want to do with your songwriting?

Legendary Entertainment has acquired the feature film rights for “The Toxic Avenger,” the studio announced on Monday.

Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment will serve as producers. Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter will oversee for Legendary.

The Toxic Avenger” follows Tromaville, New Jersey’s monstrous protector, Toxie, who is born when the mild-mannered Melvin falls into a vat of toxic waste. He’s transformed into a repulsive-yet-lovable mutant hero who stands up to bullies and corruption with irreverent zeal – doing good and brutally mauling evil in a no-holds-barred fashion.

Director and lyricist Phil Johnston will participate in TheWrap’s third annual songwriters panel on Monday night at the Dolby Screening Room Hollywood Vine.

Some of the funniest moments in “Ralph Breaks the Internet” come when Wreck-It Ralph’s pint-sized sidekick, Vanellope von Schweetz, encounters a room full of Disney princesses and discovers her own inner princess. She does so in song, “A Place Called Slaughter Race,” that is both an ode to a gritty video game in which she feels at home and a spot-on parody of the kind of longing princess songs that Alan Menken wrote for Disney animated classics like “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Tangled.”

So even though Henry Jackman wrote the score to the film, directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston turned to Menken to write the song, with lyrics by Johnston and Tom MacDougall. Johnston and Menken discussed the process in separate interviews.
