Disney Launching Standalone Loki, Scarlet Witch Shows on Streaming Service with Original Actors

Disney’s streaming service just got a whopping dose of Marvel firepower. While Disney has been quietly assembling content for its proprietary streaming service that will launch in late 2019, word has been mum on what kind of original Marvel content it would include. Jon Favreau is directing a live-action Star Wars series and there’s a TV series adaptation of Monsters Inc. in the works, but Marvel launched a partnership with Netflix years ago and has its own interconnected universe of shows running on that streaming service, including Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Per Variety, however, Marvel has plans …

Loki, Scarlet Witch, Other Marvel Heroes to Get Own TV Series on Disney Streaming Service (Exclusive)

Disney is enlisting Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as the company prepares to launch its upcoming streaming service. The entertainment giant is in early development on an ambitious plan for a number of limited series centered on popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These series will likely include shows centered on Loki and the Scarlet Witch, along with other beloved superheroes who have yet to appear in their own standalone movies.

Marvel and Disney had no comment.

There’s an important distinction from other Marvel small screen efforts, however. The actors who portrayed these heroes and villains in the Avengers films and their spin-offs, such as Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen, are expected to play them in the streaming shows. Moreover, though sources close to the production are staying mum on the cost of the programming, the budgets are expected to be hefty rivaling those of a major studio productions.

Box Office: ‘The House With a Clock in Its Walls’ to Lead Quiet Weekend

Timing really is everything.

That seems especially true for Universal Pictures’ “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” as a mid-teens launch looks to be enough to top the domestic box office. After “The Meg” and “Crazy Rich Asians” led a roaringly successful August, the rest of September looks muted with just a few wide releases on the horizon.

Universal and Amblin Entertainment’s “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” hopes to earn between $18 million and $20 million when it launches in 3,500 North American locations. Studio insiders are cautiously anticipating the lower part of that range, though some estimates show it could make over $25 million. Based on the 1973 children’s book by John Bellairs, the fantasy film follows 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), who goes to live with his uncle (Jack Black) in an old house that has a mysterious ticking heart. Cate Blanchett plays a witch who lives next door.
