Film Review: ‘Lying and Stealing’

Film Review: ‘Lying and Stealing’
Lying and Stealing” is a heist movie of a sort mostly seen in the 1960s, when movies like “Charade” found ingenious thieves played by glamorous stars preying upon the priceless knickknacks of the super-rich on the Riviera, and so forth. Such enterprises usually involved not just A-list personalities but lavish production values — all the better to realize that fantasy side of a decade that was stuck closer to Playboy Magazine and hotel-lounge luxury than to Free Love. If there was love (or at least sex) in these movies, it was going to be expensive.

But Matt Aselton’s film does not boast anyone so chic — or bankable — as Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Nor does it lay on the splashy wish-fulfillment settings, though the movie does cough up a few locations at which a homeowner might credibly own an artwork worth more than most of us earn in a lifetime.

Sunday’s premiere of AMC’s NOS4A2, based on the novel by Stephen King’s son Joe Hill, wasted no time positioning as future adversaries aged-but-not-for-long kidnapper Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto) and Vic McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings), the teenager whose emerging supernatural abilities connect them in a way that she doesn’t yet realize. But did the set-up make you want to come back to watch the follow-through? Before you weigh in, let’s sink our teeth a little more deeply into this first episode, shall we?

NOS4A2 Review: AMC's Horror Tale Is Too Slow and Mopey to Have Much Bite

NOS4A2 Review: AMC's Horror Tale Is Too Slow and Mopey to Have Much Bite
After hitting the zombie jackpot with The Walking Dead, AMC is going back to the supernatural horror well once again with the creepy-crawly NOS4A2 — and to its credit, the series does boast a breakout performance from newcomer Ashleigh Cummings. It’s just too bad that nothing else about the show lives up to that performance. Instead, any flickering glimmer of quality gets smothered by a drab visual palette, sluggish plotting and a crushingly dour tone.

NOS4A2 — debuting Sunday, June 2 at 9/8c; I’ve seen the first three episodes — is unfocused from the start, straining to tell two very different stories.

Tribeca Film Review: ‘Good Posture’

  • Variety
Tribeca Film Review: ‘Good Posture’
Friendships rarely start on terms more passive-aggressive than an intergenerational one does in “Good Posture,” writer-director Dolly Wells’ roughly drafted feature debut that manages to be just affable enough. Navigating the bookish streets of New York again after playing a kindhearted bookstore owner in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” — this time, behind the camera in present-day Brooklyn — Wells swaddles her film with her soft artistic spirit; an aura she also infused into Marielle Heller’s melancholic drama. The result is a genial slice-of-life comedy, a female-driven, late-coming-of-age tale in the tradition of Lynn Shelton’s “Laggies,” exclusively brewed and bottled among the tree-lined sidewalks of Bed-Stuy.

While sufficiently charming, “Good Posture” would have been mostly unremarkable if it weren’t for sensational “The Meyerowitz Stories” actor Grace Van Patten, who plays recent college graduate Lilian, an entitled and thoroughly privileged brat who hides her aimless existence behind her noticeable beauty.

Tribeca Film Review: ‘Blow the Man Down’

  • Variety
There’s a certain tingle that sets in when you realize that a thriller is naturalistic enough not to rely on thriller tricks. It means that you may be denied some of the knee-jerk pleasures audiences have come to expect — the jump scares and violent climaxes. The tradeoff is that it’s a lot easier to place yourself in the main characters’ shoes, to imagine what they’re going through as something that might actually be happening. And that, ironically, just ups the thriller juice.

Blow the Man Down,” directed by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy (it’s their first feature), is a drama of murder, sex, and small-town secrets set in Easter Cove, a fishing village in Maine that brings to mind the windswept coastal town of “Manchester by the Sea” — in fact, the place is so tiny and barren and gnarled it makes Manchester by the Sea look like Rome.

‘Blow the Man Down’ Review: A Witty Crime Caper With Coen Brothers Flair — Tribeca

‘Blow the Man Down’ Review: A Witty Crime Caper With Coen Brothers Flair — Tribeca
It’s hard enough when Mary Margaret Connolly passes away in the sleepy Maine fishing town of Easter Cove, leaving behind two shell-shocked daughters, a house they can no longer afford, a fish shop no one seems to patronize, and enough secrets to keep the Connolly sisters scrambling for the foreseeable future. And then one of them goes and kills a guy.

Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy’s feature directorial debut lays out plenty of familiar beats in their Coen brothers-esque crime comedy, from a bloody murder to a bag of cash, all enlivened by some wonderfully distinct accents, but the pair also find their way to a unique new story that signals their arrival as a filmmaking duo to watch.

Priscilla (Sophie Lowe) and Mary Beth Connolly (Morgan Saylor) have long occupied different stations in their small family — “Pris” has always been the stable, grownup one, while Mary
