The HeyUGuys Round-Up: Macau 2018

We’ve been on many a fantastic trip here at HeyUGuys, and needless to say, heading over to China to attend the International Film Festival of Macau, was right up there with the best of them. As we landed in Hong Kong, before taking the ferry over to the Island populated by Casinos (it didn’t get the nickname ‘the Las Vegas of Asia’ for nothing) we had an inkling this would be a special week.

Of course we were there to work, so when we weren’t stuffing our faces with the local delicacy of egg tarts, or the ‘pork chop in a bun’ which is, unsurprisingly, just a pork chop in a bun, we were found in the Cultural Centre, indulging in some of the very best cinema from around the world, several of which are films you’ll expect to hear a lot more of come award’s season.

It was time for a family dinner—and TV cast reunion—for the White Collar stars. Matt Bomer, Willie Garson, Tiffani Thiessen, Tim DeKay, Marsha Thomason and Sharif Atkins assembled for what looked like one heck of a good dinner (from the looks of the table cloth). The various captions posted to Instagram by the smiley stars tell the story: "I love this crew forever and always. So happy to catch up whenever we can. We held it together for one picture! #whitecollarreunion #family #tvfamily," Bomer wrote. "These five people fill my heart. They will always have a big place in my life," Thiessen said with the tags #whitecollar #reunion #workfamily. "Genuine affection for...

You see, in “Anchor Away,” Will found himself so enamored of the TV newscaster that the guest hottie played that he attempted to turn himself into the airhead of his crush’s dreams: in other words, Jack. And in the episode’s other plot, Karen’s need to obtain photos of Stan in the act with former mistress Lorraine (Speechless’ Minnie Driver) took the boozehound and Grace to…

Will Yvonne Strahovski (‘The Handmaid’s Tale’) turn her Emmy loss into a Golden Globe win?
Yvonne Strahovski received her first Emmy nomination this year in Best Drama Supporting Actress for her scene-stealing performance as Serena Joy in the second season of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” While Thandie Newton (“Westworld”) ended up taking home the statuette, Strahovski could snag her first piece of hardware for the Hulu drama at the Golden Globe Awards.

1. Aziz Ansari (“Master of None”): nominated for Best Comedy Actor at the Emmys, won Best TV Comedy Actor at the Globes (2018)

2. Ewan McGregor (“Fargo”): nominated for Best Limited/Movie Actor at the Emmys (2017), won Best Limited/Movie Actor at the Globes (2018)

‘Viper Club’ Review: A Kinder, Gentler Desperate-Mother Melodrama

‘Viper Club’ Review: A Kinder, Gentler Desperate-Mother Melodrama
Both an arthouse model of an old-school Lifetime movie and an unexpectedly tender take on A-list social-issue melodramas, Maryam Keshavarz’s Viper Club starts with Susan Sarandon’s frazzled, desperate mother looking directly into the camera. Or rather, “a” camera — one being held by folks out of frame, coaching her on how to properly address terrorists. She’s filming a ransom video to the men who have her grown son. He’s a war videographer, documenting the ongoing civil war in Syria; he’s also been taken hostage. So she

‘Will & Grace’: Molly Shannon Returns For Season 10; Matt Bomer Gets Additional Episodes
Molly Shannon is returning to Will & Grace this season, reprising her Emmy-nominated role as Valerie Bassett on NBC’s revival. In addition, White Collar alum Matt Bomer, who was cast for one episode this season, will be returning for three additional episodes as Will’s (Eric McCormack) suitor McCoy Whitman.

Shannon originated the role of Valerie Bassett in a 1999 episode of the hit sitcom’s original run. Val was a neighbor of Will (McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing) who acted as a replacement best friend for Will when Grace was too busy with work and later went on to stalk Jack after seeing his one-man show. Shannon appeared in five episodes from 1999 to 2004. She reprised the role in Season 9 (the revival’s first), earning an Emmy nomination for her performance.

Bomer’s Whitman is a smooth-talking, self-satisfied TV news anchor who dates Will (McCormack).

Top 3 reasons the Golden Globes may strike a ‘Pose’ for Best Drama Series

Are we underestimating FX’s “Pose” at the Golden Globes? The series explores the lives of transgender characters in the ball culture in late-1980s New York, and as of this writing it ranks fifth in the race for Best TV Drama Series with odds of 7/1, according to the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users who have entered their picks in our predictions center. So it’s a likely nominee, but not necessarily a likely winner. Here are the top three reasons I think it’s a bigger threat than our odds are giving it credit for.

1. The Globes love brand new shows

Our current Best Drama Series front-runner “Killing Eve” is certainly the kind of new series the Globes like, but it debuted back in the spring so the Emmys got there first, nominating it for its

2018 BFI London Film Festival Review – Duplicate

Duplicate, 2018.

Directed by Bill Oliver.

Starring Ansel Elgort, Patricia Clarkson, Suki Waterhouse, Matt Bomer and Douglas Hodge.

Synopsis:

Jonathan leaves the office everyday at noon. When he gets home, he goes to sleep. Every morning he wakes up and there is a breakfast prepared for him along with a video telling him about the second part of his day.

Duplicate (originally titled Jonathan in the U.S.) is a disappointing film. What sounds like an interesting and timely concept in our age of technological innovation – that we could create duplicate consciousnesses of ourselves, within ourselves, in order to explore more than one way of living – feels under-explored.

The film is slow-moving which, while perfectly acceptable at the film’s beginning when John and Jonathan’s (Ansel Elgort) personas and routines are being introduced, as well as their shared way of life, starts to feel boring and shallow quite quickly. The
